5 Daily Design Exercises to Sharpen Your Skills

NewForm·August 10, 2026

Talent is overrated. Consistency is what separates good designers from great ones. And the best way to build consistency is with daily design exercises.

Why Daily Practice Matters

Design is a skill, and skills compound. A designer who practices 30 minutes a day will outpace a designer who does 5-hour marathon sessions once a month. It's not about volume, it's about frequency.

The 5 Exercises

1. Redesign One Screen (15 minutes)

Pick any app screen, your banking app, Instagram, a random website, and redesign it in 15 minutes. Don't overthink it. The goal is speed and instinct, not perfection.

2. Design Without Color (10 minutes)

Create a UI using only black, white, and grays. This forces you to rely on hierarchy, spacing, and typography instead of color as a crutch.

3. Copy a Layout (10 minutes)

Find a layout you admire and recreate it from memory. Not pixel-perfect, just the structure. This builds your visual vocabulary.

4. Design One Component (15 minutes)

Design a single component, a button, a card, a nav bar, from scratch. Try different styles. Experiment with rounded corners, shadows, spacing.

5. Animate One Element (10 minutes)

Take any component and think about how it would animate. What happens on hover? On click? On scroll? Sketch the states. If you know Rive or Figma's animate features, prototype it.

How to Build the Habit

  • Do it at the same time every day
  • Keep a folder of your daily exercises
  • Share your favorites on Dribbble or Instagram
  • Don't skip, even 10 minutes counts
