The 5-Minute Color System Every Designer Should Build Before Starting Any Project
Most designers pick colors as they go. It feels faster, but it creates a mess that costs you 10x more time at the end.
Here's the 5-minute system to use on every project before touching a single component.
Step 1: Lock your primary (1 minute)
Pick one color that represents the brand's energy. Don't overthink it, you can refine it later. Use Coolors to generate a starting point or drop in a hex from the brand's existing materials.
Step 2: Build your neutrals (2 minutes)
You need a grayscale that has warmth or coolness baked in, not pure #000000/#ffffff. Slightly warm neutrals feel premium. Slightly cool neutrals feel techy. Pick your direction and generate 9 steps (50 through 950).
Step 3: Define semantic colors (1 minute)
Success (green), Warning (amber), Error (red), Info (blue). These don't need to be creative, they need to be clear. Grab accessible versions from Tailwind's palette if you're stuck.
Step 4: Name everything (1 minute)
brand-500 not that blue. neutral-900 not dark. Names make systems survive handoff.
That's it. Before the first component, you have a color language. Coolors makes steps 1–2 take 60 seconds flat.
